Network Ten has refused to scotch a rumour it is set to dump its staple program The Simpsons amid pressure to cut costs.

Ten said yesterday the rumour was ''speculation'' but did not deny media reports it would ditch the show and replace it with a new extended news program.

According to reports, Ten is set to remove The Simpsons from the 6pm timeslot because it is struggling to meet the $25,000-an-episode fee. That equals a cost of $6million a year.

The rumour has sparked outrage from fans of the show. The program has aired on Ten since the early 1990s. Viewers took to online forums and news sites to express their concern, while many said they would not watch a 90-minute news bulletin. ''I'll be wiping Ten off my TV,'' one angry viewer wrote.

Earlier yesterday, Ten announced the recruitment of Hugh Riminton as a political journalist in Canberra.

The shows are good but The Simpsons and Family Guy feud is even better, writes Michael Idato.

In an episode of The Simpsons from 2000, an animated Betty White stands beside a television showing the title card from The Simpsons' new stablemate, Family Guy, and begs viewers to keep "crude, low-brow programming" on air.

The sting in the gag was a cash pledge phoned in from Bart Simpson. "You've saved my network!" exclaims an animated Rupert Murdoch. "Wouldn't be the first time," Bart replies.

Julie Kavner will forever be known as the voice of Marge Simpson on the Fox animated series "The Simpsons." Twenty years of playing a role earns a person that kind of everlasting connection.

But it is a role that Kavner, 58, originated 35 years ago that she credits with launching her acting life and long-lasting love life. Back in 1974, Kavner was cast to play emotionally timid Brenda, the kid sister of Rhoda Morgenstern on the situation comedy "Rhoda." The series was a spinoff of the popular "Mary Tyler Moore Show."

"It was the first acting job where I got paid," Kavner says during a telephone interview to promote the release of the first season of "Rhoda" on DVD, which hits stores today.
